"To be a leader in advancing immunohematology and blood transfusion research, education, and healthcare, ensuring safe and effective blood transfusion practices and cell therapies for the betterment of patients' lives."
Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion (Transfusion medicine) is a multidisciplinary area concerned with the transfusion of blood and its components in the treatment of human diseases. Ever since the discovery of blood types early in the last century, the branch has evolved at a breakneck pace. Simple blood transfusion is a medical therapy which can be life saving, hence this branch is a vital part of the health care system. Traditionally, TM has been thought of as just blood collection, pretransfusion testing, and blood administration. However, modern TM is so much more than blood banking. The future of TM lies in cellular therapies: the collection, processing, and infusion of bone marrow, peripheral blood stem cells, cord blood, peripheral blood mononuclear cells, and chimeric antigen receptor T cells (CAR-T cells).
The Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion provides support and consultation to clinicians in transfusion medicine, including blood product selection, transfusion reactions, and compatibility testing.
The department's research efforts focus on understanding the immune response to blood transfusions and improving the safety and quality of blood transfusion practices. The department collaborates with national and international organizations, like the State blood transfusion council (SBTC), the hemovigilance program of India, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, etc., to document the data and develop guidelines and protocols for blood transfusion practices.
The department offers theoretical knowledge, hands-on training and clinical experience in blood banking and transfusion practices, preparing students for successful careers.
Overall, the Department of Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion plays a critical role in ensuring the availability of safe and compatible blood and blood products for patients who require transfusions. The department's research efforts, collaborations, education and training programs, and commitment to quality and safety make it an essential and a vital component of the healthcare system.
