Department

Overview

Established in 1995, the Department of Pathology has evolved into a vital hub for education and diagnostic services. Initially offering 2 MD Pathology and 2 DCP seats, we expanded to 4 MD seats in 2020 and further increased to 10 MD seats in 2023. In 2024, we awarded our first PhD in Hematopathology. By 2024, we have trained a total of 72 students, with our department emphasizing a CBME-based curriculum that integrates both horizontal and vertical aspects in MBBS teaching.

Our department is distinguished by its dual role as a postgraduate teaching facility and a provider of routine and specialized diagnostic services, including histopathology, immunohistochemistry, cytopathology, hematology, and clinical pathology. These services are crucial in guiding treatment decisions for patients. Additionally, we employ the latest teaching tools, such as a decahead, and engage in interactive teaching methods to ensure that students receive a comprehensive and effective education in pathology.

Team

Facilities

The Department offers expert diagnostic services in Histopathology, Cytology, Clinical Pathology, Blood Banking, and Hematology.

  • The Histopathology section is responsible for examining surgically removed tissues to assess their histopathologic characteristics. A precise histopathologic diagnosis is essential for determining the appropriate treatment for patients. Relevant specimens are also preserved in the museum and are used for teaching purposes in both undergraduate and postgraduate programs, as well as for examinations.
  • Additionally, the department is equipped with a cryostat, which enables the preparation of frozen sections for rapid diagnosis (within 30 minutes to 1 hour) during surgery, allowing timely decisions while the patient remains on the operating table. This facility is particularly valuable in cancer cases.
  • The Haematology section of the department is involved in providing round-the-clock service to indoor and outdoor patients and has the latest state-of-the-art equipment (advanced haematology analyzers, coagulometer).
  • The Cytopathology Section deals with the examination of body fluids and FNAC (fine needle aspiration cytology) to provide a diagnosis of cancer cases within a very short time. Cancer screening for cervical cancer is also conducted here.
  • The Blood Bank transfusion service provides whole blood, packed RBCs, fresh frozen plasma, and platelet concentrate (single donor platelets). Donors are regularly screened for HIV, HBsAg, and HCV by ELISA, and also for malaria parasites and syphilis. Our department emphasizes high-quality standards in all aspects of blood transfusion services. Universal precautions are strictly adhered to, and the guidelines of good manufacturing practices are followed.
