Department

Overview

The Department of Paediatrics was established in 2004 and has grown to offer two key programs: MD Paediatrics and PhD in Neonatology. It was one of the first departments to receive postgraduate seats for MD Paediatrics, starting with three seats, which increased to seven in 2020 and further to eight in 2024. Since 2017, the department has enrolled 37 MD Paediatrics and six DCH students, with two PhD aspirants joining between 2023 and 2024.

The department is distinguished by its robust curriculum enrichment, offering various value-added courses, including interdepartmental collaborations with Dermatology and General Medicine. It maintains seven MOUs, including an international agreement with "Early Year Solutions" that facilitates weekly online sessions related to neurodevelopmental pediatrics. Another MOU with the Academy of Paediatrics, U.P., allows for the celebration of important childcare-related days and online case discussions with specialists nationwide. The department emphasizes training in neonatal resuscitation, utilizing mannequins and models, and has organized numerous national hands-on workshops. It also addresses critical cross-cutting issues like environmental concerns, female feticide, and safe biomedical waste disposal.

The faculty comprises distinguished professionals with diverse expertise, including paediatric intensivists, developmental pediatricians, and paediatric pulmonologists, enabling the department to run eight specialty clinics. Alumni achievements reflect the department's quality, with many pursuing fellowships, administrative roles, or successful private practices. Undergraduates have excelled in national quizzes, and postgraduate students have received accolades at various conferences.

The department holds ISO 21001:2018 certification, a good clinical practice certificate, and serves as a nodal center for the WHO for reporting acute flaccid paralysis and vaccine-preventable diseases. It actively participates in ISR initiatives like the "Matra Shishu Kalyan Yojna," offering free deliveries and newborn care, and conducts school health camps in collaboration with the Department of PSM.

With increasing patient load, the department is upgrading its NICU and PICU infrastructure. It operates eight specialty clinics that provide interdepartmental, holistic, and affordable patient care, which is invaluable for training postgraduate students. Best practices include the Child Guidance Clinic (CGC), which supports children with special needs, and the popular Education Carnival, enhancing innovative student learning.
Looking ahead, the department aims to expand its offerings to include a DM in Neonatology and additional super-specialties in Paediatrics, along with fellowship opportunities in Developmental Paediatrics.
