The Department of Physiology, established in 1995, has evolved significantly over the years, expanding its MBBS seat capacity from 50 to 150 by 2022. The department also offers MD, MSc, and PhD programs, with a current intake of 5 seats each for MD, MSc, and PhD.
A key focus of the department is on yoga and respiratory physiology, promoting research and education in these areas. This includes targeted research initiatives, sensitization programs, and new educational modules for MBBS students, alongside celebrations like International Yoga Day to encourage health awareness.
The department employs innovative teaching-learning methods to enhance student engagement, including role plays, flipped classrooms, quizzes, and early clinical exposure. Interdepartmental collaborations and symposiums further enrich the learning experience.
In addition to academics, the department actively engages with the community through medical camps and awareness campaigns on crucial issues like gender sensitization and inclusivity. With a balanced teaching approach, combining traditional methods and modern e-learning resources, the department fosters a dynamic educational environment.
The state-of-the-art amphibian simulation lab enhances practical understanding of physiological concepts, providing hands-on experience with advanced techniques such as nerve conduction velocity and ECG demonstrations. This comprehensive approach prepares students for successful careers in the field of physiology.

The main thrust areas for research in the department are:
1.Medical education technology
2.Case and control studies
3. Pilot studies to understand the normal responses of human body and its functional mechanisms
4. In collaboration with other medicine branches to understand the functioning , the defect and its potential resolution
Clinical Focus:
The department has clinical focus in its teaching with integration with both preclinical departments ( horizontal integration) and clinical departments (vertical integration) to make the teaching relatable to clinical scenarios. Undergraduate students are also encouraged to undertake research projects related to clinical topics to sensitise them to clinical aspects of medicine. The basics of history taking, General physical examination and Specific systemic examination are also taught to the undergraduates which help them to form a solid base for medicine later. Familiarization with medical equipments like Sphygmomanometer, Stethoscope, Reflex hammer, Spirometer, ECG machine and Exercise stress testing is done in the department by exposing them in the first year itself. Hematological techniques are also taught which help them later in their clinical acumen.
Laboratory facilities:
Following laboratories are operating in the department.
Department of Physiology is ISO 21001:2018 Certified by Educational Organizations Management System.
