Procedures

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) refers to an eye condition that affects pre-term babies born before 31 weeks. During this, the babies may have abnormal blood vessels in the retina which may blur or impair their vision.

What Are the Symptoms of ROP?

ROP does not show any apparent signs or symptoms. The blood vessels appear when an ophthalmologist does a routine check of your baby’s eyes.

What Are the Causes of ROP?

ROP may be caused by:

  1. Birth weight lower than 3.3 pounds.

  1. Respiratory distress syndrome.

  1. Intracranial haemorrhage.

  1. Infections or other medical problems.

  1. Preterm delivery before 31 weeks.

How is ROP Treated?

ROP may be treated by:

  • Laser therapy:

During this procedure, a laser beam burns out the outer edges of your baby’s retina. This prevents abnormal blood vessels from developing.

  • Anti-VEGF therapy:

This treatment involves delivering medications in the form of injections to stop abnormal blood vessels from growing.
