Procedures

 

Total hip replacement or hip arthroplasty is a procedure to replace your hip with an implant or prosthesis.  

Why Do You Need THR? 

You may need THR if you have: 

  • Arthritis. 

  • Hip dysplasia. 

  • Cancer. 

  • Perthes disease. 

  • Trauma or accident. 

  • Benign tumour. 

What Happens During THR? 

During a THR, your surgeon will give you regional anaesthesia to numb your hip region, remove all of your hip, and replace it with a prosthesis. The prosthetic hip may either be made of metal, plastic, or ceramic. The entire procedure may usually take one to two hours. 

What Happens After THR? 

 Most hip replacements are outpatient procedures and you may be able to go home on the same day. In some cases, you may be required to stay in the hospital overnight. 

What Are the Risks Associated with THR? 

Risks with THR are rare, however, it may cause: 

  • Infection. 

  • Blood clots. 

  • Loosening of prosthesis. 

  • Dislocated prosthesis. 

  • Bone fractures. 

  • Joint stiffness. 

 

Total knee replacement or knee arthroplasty refers to a surgical procedure to replace all of your knee joints with an implant or prosthesis. The prosthesis is made of either metal or plastic. 

Why Do You Need a TKR? 

You may need TKR, if you have: 

  • Severe joint pain. 

  • Stiffness. 

  • Swelling. 

  • Limited mobility.

What Happens During a TKR? 

During the procedure, your surgeon will: 

  • Give you an anaesthesia. 

  • Remove damaged bone and cartilage. 

  • Insert prosthetic knee joint. 

  • Insert a plastic spacer to recreate a smooth cushion of your cartilage. 

  • Reshape your kneecap to fit the new prosthetic. 

What Happens After a TKR? 

After the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery room and your surgeon will watch your symptoms for a few hours. You may be able to go home on the same day. Some patients, however, may be required to stay overnight. 

What Are the Risks Associated with a TKR? 

Although rare, people may experience certain risks with TKR: 

  • Blood clots. 

  • Infection. 

  • Issues with nerves or blood vessels. 

  • Problems with prosthetics. 

  • Scar tissue inside the knee. 

  • Reduced range of motion. 

 

Partial knee replacement refers to a surgical procedure to replace a part of your knee joint. During this procedure, the surgeon will remove a damaged section of your knee joint and replace it with a prosthesis or implant made of plastic or metal. 

Why Do You Need a Partial Knee Replacement? 

You may need a partial knee replacement, if you have: 

  • Severe joint pain. 

  • Limited mobility. 

  • Swelling. 

  • Joint pain. 

  • Arthritis. 

What Happens During a Partial Knee Replacement? 

During this procedure, your surgeon will: 

  • Give you an anaesthesia. 

  • Remove the damaged bone and cartilage. 

  • Insert the prosthesis. 

  • Insert a plastic spacer to act as a smooth cushion for your cartilage. 

The entire procedure will take around an hour. 

What Happens After a Partial Knee Replacement? 

After the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery room and your surgeon will keep an eye for a few hours. You may be able to go home on the same day. Some patients, however, may be required to stay overnight.

 

A revision joint replacement surgery refers to a surgical procedure to repair or replace an artificial joint. If revision replacement is done on the hip joint, it refers to hip revision surgery or hip arthroplasty. If revision replacement is done on the knee joint, it refers to knee revision surgery or knee arthroplasty. 

Why Do You Need a Revision Joint Replacement? 

You may need a revision joint replacement due to: 

  • Normal wear and tear of the joint. 

  • Loosening of the implant from the bone. 

  • Infection. 

  • Dislocation of the implant. 

  • Broken bone around the implant. 

  • Alignment issues with the implant. 

What Happens During Revision Joint Replacement? 

During the revision joint replacement, your surgeon will remove all or a part of the joint and replace it with a new one.  

In case you have a severe infection at the joint site, you may require two surgeries. One surgery is to remove the infected joint and treat the infection. Another surgery is to place a new joint. 

What Happens After a Revision Joint Replacement? 

After the procedure, you will be required to stay in the hospital for a few days. Complete recovery may take months.
