Procedures

Surgery is one of the most common ways to get rid of a hernia. If you have a hernia, you may observe your organ pushing through the muscle or tissue holding it and visible underneath your skin.

What Happens During a Hernia Repair?

Depending on your condition and the location of hernia, your surgeon may perform an open or laparoscopic procedure.

During the procedures, your surgeon will:

  • Give you an anaesthesia.

  • Make a small incision for laparoscopic surgery and a long incision for open.

  • Position the herniated tissue back in place and repair surrounding tissues.

  • Insert a surgical mesh to provide extra support and prevent hernia from recurring.

  • Close the incision.

What Happens After a Hernia Repair?

After the procedure, you will be moved to a recovery area. If you had a laparoscopic procedure, you may go home on the same day. If you had an open procedure, you will likely be in the hospital for a few days.

What Are the Risks Associated with a Hernia Repair?

Hernia repair is usually safe. It may, however, cause:

  • Infection.

  • Collection of fluid.

  • Collection of blood.

  • Injury to surrounding tissues.

  • Problems emptying your bladder.

Circumcision refers to a procedure that removes the foreskin covering the head of the penis.

What Does a Circumcision Do?

A circumcision exposes the head of the penis. Although it started as a religious site, it is now being performed for various medical, religious, and cultural reasons.

What Are the Risks Associated with Circumcision?

Circumcision is a safe procedure but may also involve certain risks, including:

  • Bleeding.

  • Infection.

  • Pain.

  • Cutting the foreskin too long or too short.

  • Inflammation or irritation at the tip of the penis.

What Happens During a Circumcision?

During the procedure, your doctor will give you anaesthesia, clean the penis, separate the foreskin from the head of the penis, and suture the area.

Appendectomy

Appendectomy or appendix removal surgery is a procedure to remove your appendix. This is a gold-standard treatment for appendicitis, a painful inflammation of the appendix.

What Happens During an Appendectomy?

During the procedure, your surgeon will give you an anaesthesia and perform the surgery with any of the two methods:

  • Laparoscopic Appendectomy

During this surgery, your surgeon will make a small incision on your abdomen and insert a port and cannula through it. This cannula will inflate your abdomen with carbon dioxide. Following this, the surgeon will remove the cannula and insert a laparoscope. A laparoscope is a thin tube fitted with a camera and tiny surgical instruments at one end.

The surgeon will locate the appendix with the help of a camera and remove it with the instruments.

  • Open Appendectomy

During this surgery, the surgeon will make one long incision on your abdomen, open the abdominal cavity, and separate your abdominal muscles to reveal the appendix beneath. If your appendix is infected, it may recess fluid in your abdominal cavity. Your surgeon will first drain this fluid and rinse your abdomen with a saline solution.

Following this, your appendix will be tied off with stitches and removed from the intestine. Post this, the surgeon will close the incision.

What Happens After an Appendectomy?

After the surgery, you will be moved to a recovery area. If you had a laparoscopic procedure, you may go home on the same day. If you had an open procedure, you will likely be in the hospital for a few days.

What Are the Risks Associated with an Appendectomy?

Complications with appendectomy are rare. It may, however, cause:

  • Wound infection.

  • Bleeding.

  • Injury to surrounding organs.

  • Blocked bowels.

An orchioplexy refers to surgery to move testicles from your groin to your scrotum.

Why Do You Need an Orchiopexy?

Your child may need an orchiopexy if they have:

  • Undescended testicles.

  • Testicular torsion which cuts off blood flow to the testicles.

What Happens During an Orchiopexy?

During the procedure, your paediatric surgeon will give anaesthesia to your child. Once the anaesthesia sets in, the surgeon will make a small incision on your child’s groin and locate the undescended testicles and the spermatic cord.

The surgeon will examine the groin and repair the testicles and spermatic cord. Next, a small incision will be made in the scrotum to make a pocket for testicles, gently put the undescended testicles in the pocket, and close the incision with stitches.

What Happens After an Orchiopexy?

After the procedure, your child will be moved to a recovery room and monitored for 2 hours before sending you home.

Frenotomy or tongue tie release refers to a procedure to treat tongue tie in infants. A tongue tie is a condition that restricts your baby from moving their tongue. It may cause problems with breastfeeding.

What Happens During Tongue Tie Release?

During the procedure, your surgeon will make an incision on your child’s lingual frenulum; a soft tissue connecting the bottom of your baby’s tongue to the floor of their mouth. Cutting this tissue results in free movement of the tongue.

What Happens After Tongue Tie Release?

After the procedure, you will be asked to feed your baby as it will comfort them and stop any bleeding.

What Are the Risks Associated with Tongue Tie Release?

A tongue-tie release is safe. It may, however, cause:

  • Bleeding.

  • Infection.

  • Scarring.

  • Injury to saliva duct.

Hypospadias repair is a surgical procedure to repair hypospadias. Hypospadias is a congenital condition in which your urethra does not properly develop in your penis. In this condition, the opening of your penis may form either near the head of the penis, along the penis shaft, or where the penis and scrotum meet.

What Happens During Hypospadias Repair?

During the procedure, a paediatric surgeon will first give anaesthesia to your child. Once anaesthesia sets in, the surgeon will:

  • Use a sharp knife to remove a part of your child’s foreskin.

  • Use the foreskin to create a tube and attach it to your child’s urethra to make it longer.

What Happens After Hypospadias Repair?

After the procedure, your child will be moved to a recovery room and monitored. You must take your child home the same day of the surgery.
